History of the Shoals MLK Jr. Memorial committee
The Shoals' Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Committee began in 1989, three years after the official establishment of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday as a federal holiday in January by an act of Congress in 1986 after many years of politicians' resistance against honoring Dr. King with a January holiday. The idea that a group was needed locally in the Shoals to organize and lead a local celebration of the Holiday emerged during a conversation between Mrs. James Ella Turnley Bulls and Dr. Jacqueline Osborne. An invitation for those interested in this new endeavor resulted in an enthusiastic meeting in 1989 at Burrell Slater Vocational School in Florence, Alabama. This meeting produced the "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Committee - Northwest Alabama Chapter". Presidents of our Shoals Chapter (Committee) who have offered their dedication and service through the years include: Rev. B. LeCorn, Rev. C.D. Hamilton, Rev. Charlie Burgess, Rev. Larry Bonner, Mrs. Mary Stevens, and Margaret Smith.
